The images are engaging on their own, showing vast, barren landscapes and ghostly remains of old Western towns in the Spanish desert. But the accompanying essay, map, and index of images also reveals the complex half-century history behind these images. The locations and their stories bring the viewer back to a golden age of Hollywood productions involving Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Peter O' Toole, Clint Eastwood, Raquel Welch, Claudia Cardinale, John Lennon, and others. Through film, the landscapes of Almeria have also helped to shape popular perceptions of the American West, Arabia, and the Ancient Roman Empire. Some popular films shot in Almeria include: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) - Sergio Leone Once Upon A Time in the West (1968) - Sergio Leone Lawrence of Arabia (1962) - David Lean Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) - Steven Spielberg Biografía del autor Mark Parascandola is a photographer based in Washington DC. A PhD epidemiologist by training, he uses photography to explore the interactions between human populations and their environment. Mark was awarded Individual Artist Fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities 2014 and 2018 and was a Finalist for the Sondheim Prize 2011 and for Critical Mass 2016. His work has been featured at galleries in Washington DC and in Spain and appears in the DC Art Bank and numerous individual collections. His exhibit `Once Upon a Time in Almeria' was shown at the Embassy of Spain in 2012 and has since traveled to Miami and other locations. The project was recently published as a photobook, Once Upon a Time in Almeria: The Legacy of Hollywood in Spain (Daylight Books, 2017). Alex Cox (Oregon, USA) Alexander Cox is a British film director, screenwriter, nonfiction author, He is an actor and director, known for Repo Man (1984), Sid and Nancy (1986) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998). He also co-wrote and directed Straight to Hell (1986), starring Courtney Love, Joe Strummer and members of the Pogues, which was filmed at an old western movie set in Almeria, Spain. Sir Christopher Frayling (London, UK) British educationalist and writer, known for his study of popular cu lture.He has studied the history of spaghetti westerns and wrote the definitive biography of Sergio Leone, Something To Do With Death(2000). He also helped run the Los Angeles-based Gene Autrey museum's exhibit on Leone in 2005; and appeared in numerous documentaries about Leone and his films, particularly the DVD documentaries of Once Upon a Time in the West(1968).
